India and Finland on Thursday announced a series of agreements and initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in mobility, sustainability, technology and innovation during the State visit of Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
The visit marked an important step in the relationship between the two countries, with both sides agreeing to elevate their engagement to a “Strategic Partnership in Digitalization and Sustainability.” The decision reflects the growing collaboration between India and Finland in emerging technologies, green transition initiatives and innovation-driven economic growth.
Among the key outcomes of the visit was the signing of a Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement, which aims to facilitate the movement of skilled professionals between the two nations. Finland has increasingly become an attractive destination for Indian talent, particularly in sectors such as technology, research and innovation.
The two countries also renewed their earlier Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation, originally signed in 2020. The renewed agreement expands collaboration in sustainability-related sectors including bioenergy, waste-to-energy technologies, green hydrogen, renewable energy storage, and wind, solar and small hydropower solutions.
In addition, a new MoU on cooperation in official statistics was signed to promote the exchange of expertise and best practices in the field.
Both sides agreed to expand collaboration in advanced technologies by establishing a Joint Working Group on Digitalization, focusing on areas such as 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence, quantum communications and high-performance computing. A Joint Task Force on 6G will also be formed, linking research between the University of Oulu in Finland and the Bharat 6G Alliance in India to advance next-generation telecom technologies.
To strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship, the two countries agreed to develop an Indo-Finland Startup Corridorconnecting their startup ecosystems. The initiative will encourage Indian startups to participate in Slush in Helsinki, while Finnish startups will take part in Startup Mahakumbh in New Delhi.
Both nations also announced plans to double bilateral trade by 2030 and agreed to co-host the 2026 World Circular Economy Forum in India with support from Sitra and India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. They further decided to establish a Consular Dialogue mechanism between their foreign ministries to strengthen coordination on mobility and consular matters.
